We had another busy and early day ahead of us. After breakfast, the mayor graciously arranged for trucks to transport us to the village of Santa Elena. The journey took us on an hour-long drive along bumpy dirt roads, which wound through the arid terrain. As we approached Santa Elena, there was excitement in the air, for this village was not just our destination; it was a community eager to embrace a transformative project that promised to change their lives for the better.
Upon our arrival in Santa Elena, we were greeted by the sight of a small village bustling with activity as the community set up a gathering place for the ceremony. Just like during our previous visit to Rio Azul, many important community members, including local leaders and elders, came forward to speak passionately about the project's significance. They articulated how vital it was for their families to have access to clean water. Their heartfelt words resonated deeply with us, emphasizing the profound impact this initiative would have on their daily lives, health, and overall well-being.
Midway through the ceremony, dark clouds rolled in, and a gentle rain began to fall, prompting a brief intermission. Once the rain subsided, the ceremony resumed seamlessly, filled with renewed energy and enthusiasm. Following the formalities, the community generously offered us a traditional lunch before we set out to see the progress on the well.
At the project site, we checked out the newly built underground well while the project engineers explained how the construction would get water from the well to the community members. They discussed the challenges posed by the varying terrain and how careful consideration was necessary to ensure the pipes would be laid effectively. They took some time to discuss challenges with the terrain and how to make sure what would flow through consistently.
After a productive day, we returned to the hotel briefly to grab our swimsuits, and then we were whisked away to the local hot springs, a hidden gem just outside of town. Upon our arrival, we were warmly welcomed by the mayor and other local government officials, who joined us in this moment of relaxation and camaraderie. The soothing waters of the hot springs provided a perfect backdrop for us to unwind and reflect on the day’s events. Our time there culminated in a delightful BBQ feast, where we savored the flavors of local cuisine, and, of course, the celebration wouldn’t be complete without a little dancing to lively music that filled the air with joy and laughter. As our time in Santa Elena drew to a close, we found ourselves genuinely touched by the overwhelming hospitality and warmth we experienced from the mayor and the local community, leaving us with memories that would last a lifetime.
